Sending business payments from the US to Saudi Arabia
A US company pays a Saudi supplier, contractor or subsidiary by SWIFT wire in US dollars to the IBAN of the company's USD currency account at a Saudi bank, or in riyals to its current account. The Saudi Central Bank fixes the riyal at 3.75 per US dollar, and the US Country Commercial Guide records no limitation on the inflow or outflow of funds, so a dollar payment is simple to receive. This guide covers the details to collect, the rules, timing, documents and fees.
- The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) has fixed the official exchange rate at 3.75 riyals per US dollar and has stated its commitment to maintaining it.
- The US government's Country Commercial Guide states that there is no limitation in Saudi Arabia on the inflow or outflow of funds.
- Saudi banks open currency accounts for companies that hold a current account; Riyad Bank describes its business currency account as available in USD, euro, yen and pound sterling.
- BNP Paribas's Saudi Arabia branch publishes a charge of SAR 55, plus correspondent bank charges and VAT, for an incoming international transfer.
- Riyadh is 7 hours ahead of New York in the US summer and 8 hours ahead in the US winter, so a wire sent on a US afternoon lands after the Saudi working day.
Details to collect from your recipient in Saudi Arabia
Saudi accounts use IBAN, the International Bank Account Number, which begins with SA. A company's USD currency account has its own IBAN, separate from its riyal account, so ask for the one that matches the invoice currency. SWIFT is the network banks use for cross-border payment instructions, and each bank has an 8 or 11 character SWIFT code.
| Detail | What to ask for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Beneficiary name | The registered name exactly as on the account and the commercial registration | Name mismatches lead to queries |
| IBAN | The IBAN of the USD currency account, beginning SA | A dollar wire to the riyal IBAN may be converted at the bank's rate |
| Bank name, address and SWIFT code | 8 or 11 characters | Routes the wire |
| Intermediary bank | The US correspondent the bank names, with its SWIFT code | Needed by some US banks |
| Reference | Invoice number and purpose of payment | Lets the bank and the recipient match the payment |

USD or riyals: what Saudi rules mean for your payment
Two facts shape any dollar payment into Saudi Arabia: the fixed exchange rate and the free movement of funds. There is no deadline in the sources cited for bringing export proceeds home and no requirement to sell dollars for riyals, so the choice of currency is commercial. The US dollar to riyal page covers the peg in detail.
| Rule | What it says | What it means for your payment |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange rate | Fixed by SAMA at 3.75 riyals per US dollar | Little currency risk for the recipient in taking dollars |
| Inflows and outflows | No limitation on the inflow or outflow of funds | No exchange control forms for a trade payment |
| Payment methods | Open account and letters of credit are among the most common methods of payment | Both settle by SWIFT into a Saudi bank |
| Payment services | Operating a payment system or providing regulated payment services in the Kingdom requires SAMA authorization | Pay through banks and authorized providers |
| Virtual currencies | A February 2026 law firm review states that licensed Saudi banks and payment service providers do not support onshore crypto exchange or payment functionality | Pay by bank transfer |

The peg fixes the reference rate, not the rate a bank gives. If you pay riyals, compare your provider's rate with 3.75 to see the margin. For the recipient's view, see how Saudi businesses receive USD.
Rails and arrival times to Saudi Arabia
A payment from a US account reaches a Saudi bank by SWIFT through the bank's US correspondent, and the dollars settle in the United States on Fedwire. Fedwire runs from 9:00 p.m. ET on the previous day to 7:00 p.m. ET on weekdays, with a 6:45 p.m. ET deadline for customer transfers. Saudi and US banks keep different working weeks, so check the recipient bank's working days before you promise a payment date.
| Route | What the recipient receives | Timing, as published | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SWIFT wire in USD to the USD IBAN | US dollars, net of any deductions | Swift reported in August 2023 that 89% of payments on its network reached the recipient's bank within an hour; crediting follows on a Saudi business day | The standard route |
| SWIFT wire in USD to the riyal IBAN | Riyals, converted by the bank | Credited on a Saudi business day | Compare the rate with 3.75 |
| Letter of credit | US dollars against documents | On presentation of complying documents | Common on larger contracts |

Documents, screening and why payments to Saudi Arabia are held
Without exchange controls, the checks a payment meets are the recipient bank's own due diligence: who the payer is, what the payment is for, and documents for new or large flows. For a contractor or a subsidiary, keep the services agreement on file. Physical cash above SAR 60,000 must be declared at the border, which is one more reason to pay by bank transfer.
On the US side, sanctions screening applies to every payment: OFAC states that all US persons, including US-incorporated entities and their foreign branches, must comply with its sanctions, so check the payee and its bank against OFAC's lists (OFAC FAQ 11).
| Problem | What happens | How to prevent it |
|---|---|---|
| Dollars sent to the riyal IBAN | Converted at the bank's rate | Ask for the USD account's IBAN |
| Name differs from the commercial registration | Queried or returned | Use the registered name exactly |
| Missing intermediary bank | Routed slowly | Copy the bank's USD instructions |
| Sent on a US Friday afternoon | Credited on the next Saudi business day | Send earlier in the US week |
| Wire sent as SHA | Correspondent charges come out of the amount | Use OUR for invoices that must be paid in full |

Costs: SHA, OUR and Helm's fees for payments to Saudi Arabia
At 3.75, the BNP Paribas Saudi Arabia branch's inbound charge of SAR 55 is about US$14.67 per wire, before VAT and correspondent charges. Under SHA, those charges reduce what the recipient receives; under OUR, you pay the banks in the chain. For the recipient's account options, see USD business accounts in Saudi Arabia.
Helm, a financial technology company and not a bank, sends international supplier payments from your company's account by SWIFT and by local rails in the recipient's currency where available, confirmed by your account manager. The rate, fee and expected arrival are shown before you confirm. Helm's US dollar account services are provided by Bridge Building, Inc. (NMLS ID 2450917), a licensed money transmitter, with funds held at Lead Bank.
Helm agrees pricing with each business in writing before the account opens, and shows the rate, the fee and the expected arrival before you confirm each payment. See how Helm pricing works.
