What is a wire recall?

A wire recall is a request from the sending bank to the beneficiary's bank to return a payment that has already been sent, usually because it was a duplicate, went to the wrong account or was induced by fraud. It is a request, not a reversal: the money comes back only if the receiving bank, and usually the beneficiary, agree. Example (invented, for illustration only): a finance team sends the same €12,000 SEPA payment twice by mistake; its bank sends a recall for the duplicate within 10 banking business days, and the supplier's bank returns the funds after confirming with the supplier.

Key takeaways
  • The Federal Reserve describes Fedwire transfers as immediate, final and irrevocable once processed, so a mistaken US wire can only come back with the receiving side's cooperation.
  • Under the 2025 SEPA Credit Transfer Rulebook, a recall for a duplicate or technical error must be sent within 10 banking business days, or within 13 months for fraud.
  • The beneficiary's bank in SEPA has 15 banking business days to respond, and only one recall can be sent for each transfer.
  • Banks charge for recalls: DBS lists S$35 for a cancellation or recall, and Centenary Bank USD 50 for an amendment or recall.

How a wire recall works

Once a wire has been processed, the sending bank cannot pull it back. A recall is a message asking the beneficiary's bank to return the funds. That bank checks whether the money is still in the account and, in most cases, asks its customer for permission to debit it. If the beneficiary has already moved the money, or refuses, the recall fails.

SEPA gives the clearest published rules. The 2025 SCT Rulebook allows a recall for three reasons only: duplicate sending, technical problems resulting in an erroneous transaction, and a fraudulently originated instruction.

Where a business meets a wire recall

Most businesses need a recall for one of three reasons: a duplicate payment, a payment to the wrong account, or a payment to a fraudster who changed a supplier's bank details. Speed matters most in the third case. Nacha reported the FBI's finding of almost $8.5 billion lost to business email compromise in three years, and money sent to a fraudster's account is usually moved on quickly.

Before asking for a recall, check whether the payment is simply late. A trace using the payment's UETR often shows it has arrived and is waiting at the beneficiary's bank. Banks also charge for recalls: DBS lists S$35 for a cancellation or recall, and Centenary Bank lists USD 50 for an amendment or recall of a transfer.

Common mistakes with wire recalls

  • Waiting a day. Ask for a recall the same day you spot the error. The longer the money sits, the more likely it has moved.
  • Treating a recall as a guarantee. It depends on the beneficiary's bank and, usually, the beneficiary's agreement.
  • Recalling a late payment. Trace it first. A recall on a payment that has already arrived creates a second problem.
  • Not reporting fraud. If a payment was induced by fraud, tell your bank it is fraud, because SEPA, for example, allows fraud recalls for up to 13 months.

Recalls interact with finality: a Fedwire transfer is final once processed, and a SEPA recall follows the rulebook deadlines. The best protection is to confirm the beneficiary before the first payment.

Helm shows the rate, fee and expected arrival before you send an international payment, and a named account manager answers payment questions in writing within one business day. Blockchain transfers in USDC or USDT cannot be recalled by a bank, so check wallet details with the same care.

Questions

Can a wire transfer be reversed?

Not by the sender alone. Fedwire transfers are final and irrevocable once processed, and an international wire can only come back if the beneficiary's bank returns it, usually with the beneficiary's agreement.

How long do I have to recall a SEPA payment?

Under the 2025 SCT Rulebook, 10 banking business days for a duplicate or technical error, or 13 months for fraud. The beneficiary's bank has 15 banking business days to respond.

How much does a wire recall cost?

Banks set their own fees. DBS lists S$35 for a cancellation or recall, and Centenary Bank lists USD 50 for an amendment or recall.

What should I do if I paid a fraudster?

Call your bank immediately, tell it the payment was induced by fraud, and ask it to recall the payment and alert the beneficiary's bank. Speed matters, because funds are often moved on quickly.

Should I recall a payment that has not arrived?

Trace it first using the UETR. Most late payments are waiting at the beneficiary's bank, and a recall would only add delay.
